If you're planning a photo session in Gran Canaria and want to avoid the usual tourist crowds, you're in the right place. While I love the energy of Las Palmas, sometimes the best sessions happen just outside the city — in places where it's quiet enough to breathe and beautiful enough to pause.
These locations are all within 10 to 20 minutes by car from Las Palmas. Each one has something different to offer — cliffs, gardens, natural pools, mountain views — but they all share one thing: space for you to feel calm, grounded, and seen.
Here are 7 of my favorite places for portraits, branding sessions, vacation photoshoots, or relaxed photo walks — especially if you want something a little more honest and a little less “Instagram famous.”
#1 Photoshoot Location in Gran Canaria: Jardín de la Marquesa (Arucas)
Just 20 minutes from Las Palmas.
If you’re looking for a peaceful, elegant location with lots of greenery, Jardín de la Marquesa in Arucas is a great choice. It’s about 20 minutes from Las Palmas and feels quiet, well-kept, and easy to move around in.
The garden has a mix of palm trees, cactus, tropical plants, and old stone walls — which makes it perfect photoshoot location in Gran Canaria for relaxed portraits with a natural feel. You’ll also likely meet a few peacocks roaming freely around the garden, which adds a unique and charming touch to the setting (and sometimes, to the photos!). There’s plenty of shade, which helps with soft, flattering light throughout the day.

What I like most about this place is that it’s private and not too crowded, especially in the mornings. It works well for sessions where you want a calm atmosphere without distractions.
It’s ideal for:
Personal branding
Couple or maternity shoots
Natural portraits in a green setting
🕰 Best time to shoot: Morning or just before sunset
🎟 Entry fee: Yes, but affordable and worth it
👗 Wardrobe tip: Neutral tones and soft colors like beige, olive, or cream work beautifully with the greenery and stone. If you want something more eye-catching, bold tones like red, yellow, orange, or blue will stand out well and give your portraits a stronger, more editorial look.
Choose what fits your personality — both options photograph well here.
#2 Photoshoot Location in Gran Canaria: Playa de La Laja
Just 15 minutes south of Las Palmas.
If you're looking for a beach location that feels open, raw, and real, Playa de La Laja is a hidden gem just south of the city.
This beach has yellow-black volcanic sand, rocky textures, and a long, empty stretch that makes it perfect photoshoot location for portraits with plenty of space. It's a known spot for surfers due to the wind and waves, but there are still small corners where the breeze is softer and the light is calm, especially in the early morning or at sunset.

The beach connects directly to Las Palmas and San Cristóbal via a long promenade, giving you different scenery along the way — including cliffs, ocean spray, and the impressive Triton statue standing against a backdrop of the mountains.
It’s ideal for:
Solo portraits or movement-based sessions
Personal branding with a clean, minimal or edgy style
Family or couple shoots who love nature and don’t mind a little wind
Clients looking for a wide, open location without crowds
🕰 Best time to shoot: Morning for softness and stillness, or golden hour for a warmer look👥 Crowd level: Almost always quiet. Locals use the promenade, but the beach itself stays empty
👗 Wardrobe tip: Earthy, natural tones blend beautifully with the sand. For bold, cinematic contrast, try black, white, or bright bold colors like red orange, mustard, or deep blue.
#3 Photoshoot Location in Gran Canaria: Jardín Botánico Canario
Just 15–20 minutes by car.
The Jardín Botánico Canario is one of the easiest places to access near Las Palmas if you’re looking for a green, natural background. It’s spacious, calm, and has a mix of areas — palm trees, cactuses, rocky paths, and forest-like spots with shade.
It’s a great option if you want something nature-based but easy to walk. There’s no long hike or big climb, but it still feels like you’ve stepped away from the city.
It’s ideal for:
Family photos
Maternity sessions
Branding with a relaxed, natural look
Simple portrait sessions in nature

🕰 Best time to shoot: Morning or late afternoon for softer light
👥 Crowds: Very quiet on weekdays. Even when others are there, it’s easy to find private areas
💶 Entry: Free
👗 What to wear: Earthy, natural tones work well with the green background. If you want more contrast, deeper tones like burgundy or mustard look great too.
