Family Photoshoot in Maspalomas Dunes with Small Kids: Honest Tips for Parents

Will your kids actually enjoy a family photoshoot in Maspalomas Dunes or will everyone be tired, sandy, and annoyed before sunset? It is a very real question.
Maspalomas Dunes is one of the most beautiful places for family photos in Gran Canaria. The landscape feels calm and open, the light can be soft and golden, and children have space to move, run, explore, and be themselves.
But if you are travelling with small children, you already know the truth: even beautiful places can become difficult very quickly.
The sand can be hot. The walk can feel longer than expected. Someone may get wet in the first five minutes. A toddler may suddenly decide they do not want to be photographed. Another child may be scared of the ocean. And parents, understandably, may start to feel stressed because they really want the photoshoot to work.
This does not mean the session is ruined. It means the photoshoot needs to be built around real family life — not perfect poses, forced smiles, or children performing for the camera.
You do not need perfectly behaved children for beautiful family photos. You need a relaxed rhythm, enough space, and a photographer who understands that kids are not supposed to act like adults.

Is Maspalomas Dunes a good place for family photos with small kids?
Yes — but only with the right timing and expectations.
For family photos with small children, I usually recommend sunrise or sunset.
The light is softer, the temperature is more comfortable, and the session feels calmer. Midday is usually not ideal because the light is harsh, the sand can be too hot, and children get tired faster.
I also keep the session simple. We do not need a long walk deep into the dunes. With kids, less is often better: a short walk, a beautiful spot, some movement, a little play, and time to settle in.
Maspalomas Dunes can be a wonderful location for a natural family photoshoot, but it works best when children are allowed to move instead of being asked to stand still for too long.
What makes the dunes beautiful for family photos?
The dunes give family photos a very simple, timeless feeling. There is not too much visual noise. Just sand, sky, light, movement, and your family.
That simplicity works especially well if you like natural, emotional photos rather than very posed portraits. Children can run, sit in the sand, hold hands, climb into your arms, walk toward the water, or hide behind you for a moment.
Those small, imperfect moments often become the photos parents love most because the photo feels like your family.

What can be challenging with small kids?
The dunes are beautiful, but they are still a real outdoor location.
Sometimes the sand is hot under bare feet. Sometimes children get tired from walking. Sometimes the wind picks up. Sometimes they want to go straight to the water and get completely wet. Sometimes they are scared of the waves and do not want to be close to the ocean at all.
And sometimes, they simply do not want to be photographed.
This is normal.A child refusing photos does not mean the session has failed. It usually means they need a little space, a change of focus, or a moment where nobody is asking anything from them.
What happens if your child refuses to be photographed?
If your child gets upset, the worst thing is usually to push harder.
I have seen this happen many times. A toddler does not want photos. The parents get stressed. They start asking, promising, convincing, negotiating: “Please, just one photo,” “Look at the camera,” “Smile,” “Come here.”
And the child gets more upset.
In that moment, I usually ask parents to step back a little and give the child space. Not forever. Just enough for the pressure to disappear.
On the beach, there are always things to explore: stones, sand, shells, waves, footprints, water.
And almost every child loves throwing stones into the water.
That small moment of play can bring the whole session back.
The child stops feeling watched. The parents breathe again. The mood changes. And suddenly, there are real photos: little hands choosing stones, a parent helping, a child laughing, wet feet, sandy clothes, everyone slowly relaxing.
That is often where the best images begin.

My approach to family photos with small children
I do not expect children to pose perfectly.
Some children need time to warm up. Some want to run. Some stay close to their parents. Some hide. Some get curious. Some are serious at first and playful later. Some never want to look directly at the camera.
That is fine.
I gently guide the session, but I do not try to control every moment. I give children space to move, explore, and slowly feel safe. I also help parents know when to step in, when to play, and when to simply let the moment happen.
A natural family photoshoot is not about making your children behave perfectly.
It is about photographing the connection you already have: how they hold your hand, run back to you, climb into your arms, laugh at something small, or need a quiet cuddle when everything feels too much.
What to bring to a family photoshoot in Maspalomas Dunes

When Maspalomas Dunes may not be the best location
Maspalomas Dunes is not the right choice for every family.
If your child is very tired, hates sand or you want a very easy stroller-friendly session, another location may work better. A quiet beach edge, a promenade or a park can sometimes create a much calmer experience.
The goal is not to force a famous location.
The goal is to choose a place where your family can feel relaxed enough to be yourselves.
If I think another location would work better for your children’s ages, mood, or schedule, I will tell you honestly.
